FOUR YEARS AGO, ELLIE HUGHES MADE A CONSCIOUS DECISION TO ONLY PURCHASE ETHICALLY MADE OR SECONDHAND CLOTHES.

and as any modern day shopper can attest, this kind of decision takes some serious commitment: no quick fashion fixes from Zara, no inexpensive basics from big brands, etcetera and so on. but to hear it from her perspective, it seems like there could be no other option: “consumers have the power to effect real change by refusing to support brands that enable child labor, human trafficking and global pollution,” says Ellie. “given the information and resources necessary, i believe people can stay true to their personal style and buy better.”

the more she researched, the more passionate she became about empowering others to shop ethically while maintaining their personal sense of style, so much so that she launched a well-edited, insanely stylish blog aptly named selflessly styled. this commitment to supporting ethical lifestyle choices extends beyond fashion, too: Ellie recently joined the marketing team over at Brew Dr. Kombucha, the first certified B-corp kombucha brand. she spends her days running social media and influencer relationships — and generally spreading the good word about the importance of practicing sustainability no matter what business you are in.

as for her days off? she spends those exploring places near and far with her husband. their most recent jaunt was to Hood River, an outdoorsy gem of town located in Oregon’s Columbia Rover Gorge. here, where they went and what she wore when exploring the local town and country.

why Hood River?

"it's close to Portland (the drive is under two hours, even with traffic!) and the laid-back vibe of the city is just so charming — it always helps us unwind during a somewhat chaotic season of work and life!"

where did you stay?

"the Hood River Hotel, a renovated vintage hotel right in downtown Hood River. it's dog-friendly, which was a must since we had our corgi Pip with us!"

what did you do?

"we walked several miles by the water, drinking in the fresh air and sunshine. and we ate at the Broder restaurant in our hotel each morning — it's the best Scandinavian brunch (and one of the reasons we stayed where we did!). on Saturday night, we stumbled across a live jazz concert in our hotel, which was a lot of fun."

the one thing you always do when you visit?

"eat pizza at the Double Mountain brewery."

what did you pack / wear?

"i kept my wardrobe really light. the nonstop tee, which i wore to work on Friday and then on to our little road trip without changing. the orion leggings for long walks by the water and morning yoga. the nonstop dress for brunch (with white sneakers) and dinner (with heeled boots). the no BS bomber for the chilly spring weather. and a pair of black skinny jeans. all of it fit beautifully in my Lo & Sons weekender."

packing rule of thumb?

"pack light. seriously, you don’t need as much as you think you do!"

WORDS TO LIVE BY?

"less clutter, more space. less judgment, more grace."
